This summer I had the oppurtunity to take an amazing and dear friend fly fishing on the North Platte. His name is Kayaka Isaac he is from Tanzania, Africa. We met when he came down as a friend of our priest and ever since he has been a dear friend of the family. But finally I had the chance to take him out doing what I love and he would soon feel the same. We were floating the Gray Reef section and it was a gorgeous day. He had never fly fished before and was curious about everything. Teaching him to cast was easy, he was a natural. He immediately had a hit. Down went his strike indicator, and down stayed his rod. “Set the hook”, “raise the rod”, but it was to late. We laughed about it for awhile, but i will tell you he never missed another hit. The next cutbow that took his pheasant tail was not as lucky as the first. Isaac set the hook and the fish was on, wait a minute there’s slack line coming of his real, oh no reel the other, reel the other way!!! He had been letting the fish swim to the ocean. Just another thing that made the day better! The fish didn’t get off. He pulled it along side the boat and we got it in the net. I have never seen some one so excited. He appriciated what had just happened so much. We continued the day regularly catching fish. Towards the end of the drift, the boat ramp was in sight but one of the best runs was still to come. He had not yet caught a large rainbow and we wanted him to catch one more. ZZZIIINNNGGG there he goes, no reel the other way, real, reel. He never did get the idea. Ok the fish was still on and it was a nice one. We stayed still while he fought the fish and netted it. Our smiles tell the rest. We still keep in touch with him via email and he still speaks of that day.
