Sometimes it’s ok to be the old guy! For a long time I have needed a weekend away with just my son. Both of us work together so quality time on the weekend does not happen much. Joey and I played hokey on Friday and headed to my favorite Maine River. Two sets of everything form waders to rain gear off we go. Blue bird day sunny 84 and a river full of fish! We wade to my favorite pool and Joey says Dad there everywhere! I though the same thing until my third drift. I must be stuck on a moving rock, some rock. The form of a sucker! Little did I know that May is sucker spawning season? We did see some Brookes working something but for 8.5 hours of casting and changing flies no luck nothing. That night we met Bob Duport a local Maine guide. We started asking what the hell are we doing wrong? We explained the sucker situation and he suggested trying an egg pattern. Sometime during the sucker run the Brookes eat the eggs. Joey being smart enough not to know it all (when it comes to fly fishing) take Bobs advice. Not me! The next morning we head back to the same pools as the day before still plenty of suckers but no trout showing. We had down stream to some warmer water. Joey finds a nice pool by a bridge. First cast, people watching and BOOM the indicator is off and running. Dad I got one bring the net! I hurry up stream, up current as fast as I can. Nice fish, dam that is a good one! What did he take the prince or caddis nymph? He inhaled a steelhead egg pattern. Yellow flash. No way could you ever catch a MAINE TROUT with that. Well check out the picture. I guess this old guy can still learn a little something about fly fishing. Listen to the locals. Joey did! See ya on the rivers Joe-m

Great article. Flyfishing is the best way to spend time with and get to know friends and, in your case, family. All the bullcrap disappears and its just you, the person your with and the water. Other sports build character but flyfishing REVEALS character. So if you can find a good flyfishing buddy, you’ve probably found a friend for life.
I could not agree more Thanks !
