5:30 am Saturday morning and Glen and I are putting his new boat in at the Pine Point launch. It’s almost low tide, the wind is blowing, it’s raining lightly and the temp is about 50 (without the wind). Welcome to striper fishing in May. Surprisingly we aren’t the only diehards on the marsh. I can see a few other fly fishermen over on the Ferry Beach side but nobody’s pole is bent. We head up into the marsh towards the trestle bridge in search of the roaming schools. We’ve gone about 200 yards from the launch when I notice a cresent shaped sand bar that disappears underwater in front of us. We drift over this structure and sure enough, the fishfinder (okay so we cheated a little) confirms my suspicions. The fish are stacked up on the down current side of the bar just waiting for the bait to drift over above them. We anchor up, cast out and drift our offerings over the bar and pull in fish after fish for about 2 hours until the end of the outgoing tide. What a great way tostart the 2004 season.
