Today was a good day. I caught two steelhead and met a fellow fly fisherman from this site, fishgolf or Mickey. The weather couldn’t have been worse and the water on the Salmon River was very high. I started out on some smaller water in the morning and tried a steelhead run that had produced last year. I rigged up my leader and tippet perfectly and checked all of my knots. I walked through the driving lake effect snow and into the water. I cast my glo bug egg pattern upstream and drifted the slow inside seam. Yup, a fish was holding in the same exact spot as last year. Not a giant steelhead, but a nice looking steelhead and it made my morning. I knew Micky was fishing the Salmon River, so I decided to head to where I thought he might be. I had been told not to bother fishing there by a few friends that I consider quite knowlegable on the Salmon River and it’s varied species. But, I figured Mickey would be there and it would be good to meet him and spend the rest of the afternoon fishing with him rather than by myself. Within 5 minutes of shaking hands with Mickey we had a double hook up! That’s got to be a good sign.Mickey had 2 boxes of flies, he was covered with snow and the wind was slapping his face, yet he was having a good time. I look forward to our next trip Mickey, have a good birthday.

Greg I had a fun time on the river today, especially watching you land your second steelie of the day.
Mickey
I fish and work with Mickey – gotta love the honey hole!!!
I had a great time fishing with you Mick, we’ll do it again after Christmas.
Glad you two got a chance to meet and fish together. Man it was blustery cold yesterday, glad you stuck it out and put some steel on the board.
Kudos on going for it anyway. It’s great to see your efforts paid off. I’m heading up tonite and hoping for some luck of my own.
What honey hole? A reminder to all lovers of steel. When it’s this cold, try not to even take the fish out of the water or risk freezing it’s gills and killing it. A picture isn’t worth a dead steelhead.
greg – nice work .. you went out on a solo steelhead trip, found a couple steelhead and came back with a new fly fishing buddy! … i am sure this won’t be the last time you and fishgolf/mickey fly fish together … maybe we should all meet up in Gaspe’ for the atlantic salmon this spring …
