Mike picks me up at 5 am. We are in Southern Rhode Isalnd in no time. We hit some of my usual hot spots and nothing is doing. It is a perfect striper day. The fog was so thick, it almost felt like it was raining. So we stop by Captain Don’s Fly and Tackle in Charlestown. Don tells us about a spot that might be good for that day. He was right. We showed up on the flat and we could hear the birds and fish. We could not see them in the fog, so we worked our way out on the flat until we started seeing fish breaking. First cast. I’m hooked up and so is mike. Double fish. What a way to start the weekend. Schools of fish were around us all night and we caught 65 fish in a couple hours. Most of the fish we were catching were in the 20-26 inch range. However, Mike hooked into a nice 36 inch fish. Mike was fishing intermediate line and I was fishing 275 grain fast sinking line. Black Clouser was our fly of choice. We were both psyched and we went out to get dinner at a local bar and restaurant. The next day was not as productive (21 fish). Bright sun and we had to work a little harder on the crystal clear flats. I did pick up some nice 26 inch fish in crystal clear water when the tide switch from outgoing to incoming. We met so many great guys on the water. Rhode Island is definately a fishermans state. Like anywhere else, there are so many spots to fish and you gotta bounce around alot until you find the fish. Different locations will have different water temps, different wind conditions and different tidal conditions. All of these things are critical to catching large amounts of fish. So, that’s why I like fishing with Mike. He fishes hard and he is not afraid to move and he’s willing to fish in any conditions. So, we had a great spring trip to Rhode Island, and we are going back in June and October. June in Rhode Island means big Stripers. October in Rhode Island means False Albicore on the Fly. A big thanks goes out to all the Flyfishermen we met. Trading flies, swaping stories and fishing the flats with you guys made our trip even better. Come on up to Maine anytime.
