The fish must know when I have friends in town. For two nights in a row, the weather was picture perfect. The tides were right on time and the fish were everywhere. My friend Jason is in town from Utah, and I have been telling him about the fast Saltwater action. Of course, as soon as he casted his first fly, things slowed down to a dull roar. Joe-M and Joey were equally as excited to get into the fast action, so they brought us out on their boat. It was unbelievable, we cruised the shorelines and flats only to find tons of bait and no fish. Jason casted from the bow into the same rips that were holding countless fish the night before. Nothing! Zero Ziltch! Finally, Jason hooked into a decent fish and that was fun for him, but I knew that it could have been signifcantly better. Joe-M and I thought that things would pick up as the tide changed. Nope. The birds dove, the bait fish were frantic, the tide rolled in but the fish never showed up like they should have. It is amazing how that happens. The fishing is so hot and then you call your buddy and say, “You gotta get here, it’s unbelievable!” Then your cursed! Something happens. Some mysterious force drives the fish right outa town and then the dreadful words come outta your mouth. “You Shoulda Seen It Yesterday.” Si from now on, I am gonna start telling people the following things: “fishing will probably be no good. Chances are we won’t get into a thing. Hey, if we get one, we’ll be lucky. It’s tough out there. Not much around.” Nobody cares about yesterday. Everybody cares about the here and now. Speaking of the here and now, I gotta run. Jason is leaving tonight and I have a few more hours to get him into some fish. We were gonna try for trout, but Jason is keyed in on the Stripers and Bluefish. We probably won’t get into much, it’s tough out there, not much around.
