It had been a long time since Jeremy and I had fly fished together. When we planned a day to fly fish for wild rainbows in crystal clear water we were both all pumped up. So at 3:00 in the morning I call jeremy to wake him up. We begin to make our way to the rainbows within no time. We both knew it would be a good day of fly fishing. So we get to the river and fish are rising everywhere. It was time to put the hurt to the mean bows’. I catch a few small fish and jeremy has a monster on and he breaks off.Nick shows up and has fish all around him and he hooked quite a few. I tried to concentrate on a few big fish but they were fussy. We were all having such a hard time hooking them. Nick heads out around noon and the water starts to rise. Yest! Just enough to stir things up a bit.We get down to the run and fish are tailing and rising in super shallow water. Elk hair caddis, chuck it out there and watch them pounce on it was the name of the game…..NOT! The fish were soooooo fussy with the elk hairs. I look at the water, dun mayflies, size 18. I watch as they get sucked beneath the surface by the trout. I try numerous flys and finally found that they would take an adams parachute. It felt good to catch a few of the picky fish. All the top action starts to die down. We both switch to the nymphs and catch no fish, it’s time for the last hurrah and we head up to the top run. A caddis for Jeremy and a nymph rig for me. Jeremy is joking around and saying “you won’t hook anything” but I was intent on catching a nice fish. I make a drift with my weightless nymph setup on the inside seam of the bubbles. I watch my indicator stop and I set the hook. Bottom, or so I thought. The line moves at me so fast it makes a splicing sound in the water. Do I have a fish on” I ask? “Yea!” says Jeremy and it was off to the races. The fish points his nose down and runs. I am immediatly into my backing and cannot believe I finally have a nice trout on my line. You may be looking at that picture and saying to yourself “that took him into the backing?” but it just shows how strong these fish really are. We land the fish and are just in awe of its colors and its strengh. He ended up taking the size 18 serendipity that I tied ecpecally for this occasion. This is my best fish ever. The bigger fish that I landed here last time didn’t even give me time to enjoy the fight and relize it was happening. With this fish I was able to enjoy every minute of the fight. Later on I remembered the mellow face on the trout and said to jeremy “he was just a nice guy, unlike all the angry others. I was so happy and so was Jeremy. What a beautiful Rainbow Trout. Thanks jeremy for a great day.
