Plans changed, quick. I was the one who decided on the run we should hit this morning and it failed miserably. Maybe the fish were there and not interested in our flies? Maybe the fish moved up river? Maybe we were not offering them anything they wanted. Whatever the case, we threw an hours worth of drifts through the run and it produced nothing. So, we moved on. I kept my mouth shut and let someone else decide where to go next. That’s when waterwhippa took charge and said, “I know where to go.” So, off we went and he was right. Karma played an instant roll and waterwhippa was tied into his first Brown Trout. A beautiful fish, tricked with a pink egg pattern. Then, waterwhipa was hooked up again, and again and again. He tied into one huge steelhead and it ripped downstream and that was that. Not on for long, but he put on quite show. We hooked and landed what seemed to be endless amounts of nicely colored Brown Trout. One brown put Joey’s landing skills to the test. I swear the fish ran a quarter mile downstream and took Joey with him.

The Browns we were fishing to were all nosed up against a drop off. It was a gravel skinny water run that dropped off sharply into a deeper hole. All of the fish, other than the King Salmon, were holding in the faster riffly water. Very few fish were hooked in the middle section and tailout of the pools. We found similar scenarios each and every time we found fish. We were not interested in the King Salmon, so we constantly fished these faster moving runs and pocket waters. Again, today found us on sections of water that was all ours. It was a great day. Lots of Brown Trout tricked and landed, tons of laughs, great weather and we will hopefully find much of the same tomorrow. Morning will find us chasing the steelhead. We certainly found nice pods of Brown Trout. Now, our goal for tomorrow is to find an equally big pod of steelies.
