I am off to San Francisco tomorrow for a few days of business and then heading into the Sierras for some trout fishing. I will probably go for a few steelhead on the Sacramento River on my way up to the Lake Tahoe area. There is alot of snow in the mountains at this time, but some of the lower altitutes are supposedly producing some nice fish. Primarily browns and rainbows. The picture that you see is the river that I will fish in the Sierras. The name of the river is the East Walker River and it is absolutely magnificent. The river flows through rugged canyons as well as quiet meadows and the flyfishing is absolutely world class. I will be fishing just what you would expect. During the early part of the day I will be nymphing with small bugs in sizes 18 and smaller, flashback pheasant tails, most midge patterns in black or olive and in sizes 20-22. Then, believe it or not, there will be some Blue Winged Olive hatches around noonish. So if I see the hatch going on, I will undoubtedly try emergers or …some dry flies. Either way, I will have fun and even if I don’t catch any it will still feel good to have a trout rod in my hand again. I will post a follow up article and post some photos. The landscape is absolutely awesome out there. Stay tuned. Gotta go for now, I got 3,000+ miles to travel tomorrow. Goodnight.
