July in New England means warm water fishing bass, pike, pickerel etc. This can be fun top water, nice weather and something always bends the rod. I was fishing for small mouth bass on the Kennebec River south of Shawmut. What a pleasant surprise. Long cast popping top water bugs and boom a good size brown trout hits my bug. Shocked I tried to horse it in and lost it. Now I put on my trout hat on. I waded over to the area the brown hit and saw a deep hole. It’s time for the nymph rig. You all know that from the last story. Standard set up using slightly larger files. I started casting; in the first few minutes boom a nice BASS, DAM it… Not ready to move I switched flies again and again and again. Wadding/fishing across the top of the pool, side of of the pool, bottom of the pool and back to the top. Now I’ve had it nun no fish too hot etc. 1 more try I removed the strike indicator and replaced it w/ a yellow stimulator size #10, short leader with a #12 wooly buggy off the bend. The fish first hit a top water popper so why not a large stimulator. Making a few casts nothing; a huge cloud comes over, one more cast and boom!Mr. Brown is back. This time I take my time and net the beauty. You never know what turns the browns on but I’m glad I was there. See ya on the river Joe-m
