All of our pre-colorado conversations consisted of me being the typical girlfriend explaining to Joey that this is “our” vacation and he is allowed two days of fly fishing, so we can enjoy doing some other things like site seeing, skiing, and any other overrated tourist excursion. Well, little did I know that I would be the one anxiously asking each morning… “so what river are we fly fishing today?”Thanks to my new buddies at a local fly shop, I was well equipped with the whole Orvis attire from waders to boots. Oversized waders and boots 3 and a half sizes too big and I was off to fish the Gore Creek. While Joey watched, I got my first “real” fly fishing lesson and within 5 minutes, I caught my very first fish ever…just a little brownie, but felt great to have something on the end of my line besides soggy sticks and moss. My most memorable day in Colorado was when Joey and I took a trip to Basalt, CO where we fished the Frying Pan River. I can’t say I have ever been in a more beautiful and peaceful spot. We were surrounded by deep red canyons, jagged snow capped mountains, and crystal clear trout filled waters! Our time spent on the Frying Pan River was overall successful, with me catching my second fish ever and Joey catching a priceless rainbow, which I took great pride in helping him net. We got a little taste of home, when we hooked up with Bill Morris, a New England native who took his precious free time to show us his secret spots on the “Roaring Fork”. Never did I envision myself tromping through 2 feet of snow with rod and reel in hand, jumping barbed wire fences and casting in 33 degree water with ice chunks bombarding my feet. However, there I was having the time of my life. Joey caught a few nice ones that day. I casted about 500 times, hooked one, and landed zero. Regardless, I left there with a little tendonitis in my wrist, a whole new vocabulary (never thought I would be saying things like “I need a midge”, or “I don’t like that kind of indicator” or “gotta mend that a little bit”, and a new hobby that I hate to admit I may be addicted to!
