Colorado VideoHi Speed Only
All of our pre-colorado conversations consisted of me being the typical girlfriend explaining to Joey that this is “our” vacation and he is allowed two days of fly fishing, so we can enjoy doing some other things like site seeing, skiing, and any other overrated tourist excursion. Well, little did I know that I would be the one anxiously asking each morning… “so what river are we fly fishing today?”Thanks to my new buddies at a local fly shop, I was well equipped with the whole Orvis attire from waders to boots. Oversized waders and boots 3 and a half sizes too big and I was off to fish the Gore Creek. While Joey watched, I got my first “real” fly fishing lesson and within 5 minutes, I caught my very first fish ever…just a little brownie, but felt great to have something on the end of my line besides soggy sticks and moss. My most memorable day in Colorado was when Joey and I took a trip to Basalt, CO where we fished the Frying Pan River. I can’t say I have ever been in a more beautiful and peaceful spot. We were surrounded by deep red canyons, jagged snow capped mountains, and crystal clear trout filled waters! Our time spent on the Frying Pan River was overall successful, with me catching my second fish ever and Joey catching a priceless rainbow, which I took great pride in helping him net. We got a little taste of home, when we hooked up with Bill Morris, a New England native who took his precious free time to show us his secret spots on the “Roaring Fork”. Never did I envision myself tromping through 2 feet of snow with rod and reel in hand, jumping barbed wire fences and casting in 33 degree water with ice chunks bombarding my feet. However, there I was having the time of my life. Joey caught a few nice ones that day. I casted about 500 times, hooked one, and landed zero. Regardless, I left there with a little tendonitis in my wrist, a whole new vocabulary (never thought I would be saying things like “I need a midge”, or “I don’t like that kind of indicator” or “gotta mend that a little bit”, and a new hobby that I hate to admit I may be addicted to!
Welcome to flyfishing addiction. To start this hobby in Colorado on the Frypan River is envious to many. Although I do not envy the 33 degree water temps. Tell Joey that teaching you to flyfish in Belize this time of year might be a little more comfortable.
RUN!!! Far away… OOPS too late, you’re “Hooked.” Great Job. Bill is a childhood friend of mine and a great teacher. Glad everything worked out perfect. Sounds like a great trip. Looking forward to seeing more adventures.
Great Read Amos- I had a wonderful time fishing with you out west. You certainly took me by surprise when you asked where we were going to fish next. We have to try it again when it is a bit warmer and the waders and boots are not tooo big!!!
Amy – Jeremy is all over this one! I’m sure he’ll have lessons lined up for me as soon as spring is here. Glad you had a great time and got “hooked”. Who knows, maybe someday, you and I, will leave the boys at home and take our own fishing adventure to the Salmon River!
Great read. Congrats on your first fish. What a beautiful back drop to compliment your experiance. Nice camera work too.
Sounds like a keeper to me!
I used to love it when my wife and I fly fished together. Kids changed that for us, but we started drowning worms with the youngens last year.
Amy,
Just remember to turn that wrist, pick a target on the otherside of the river, lift and flip. Rod Tip up!!!! I had a great time with you and Joe and in the short period of time I got to show you a few things helped you and made the fishing a little more fun. Trust me those 500 casts you made and the few thousand more you’ll make over the years will start to pay off. When you come out again we’ll work on something else. I love teaching this stuff.
Great pics….i finally got my wife to watch a fishing video! Also nice to see something other than a dude holding up a big fish for a change.
Sweeeet! I have fished in Colorado but never this time of year. The fish and Moutains are even more striking with the white background, You look like your having a blast, conversley the fish look deppresed. Great video!
Nice Fish Amy! I hope you realize what you’ve gotten yourself into! Congratulations on your baptism into the amazing world fly fishing opens up!
