Here’s the story. I grew up fishing the Beaverkill and Willowemoc. At this point in my life I have a developed a sincere passion for these waters and I concurrently find myself in a position where I rarely get to fish them ( maybe 4 times a year ). My family has a house on the Beaverkill and this week described to me firsthand the devastation in the area. It was nearly total. On Tuesday night I checked the Catskillfllies website. They report on stream conditions every day. The average flow for the Beaverkill is about 350 cfs this time of year. It was at about 6,000. My family had about 5 feet of water in our basement. We are literally across the road from the Beaverkill and we were lucky. Many people lost their cabins and boats (not to mention a few who lost lives in these most recent floods). The waters are still raging ( too high to fish ) although they have receded dramatically. The town of Roscoe, NY ( dubbed trout town USA ) was devastated. The post office had 5 feet of water in it. Many shops were damaged or destroyed outright. The Antrim Lodge ( a longtime flyfisherman stronghold, though closed for many years) which was in a state of total renovtion now needs to be re -renovated.
Anyway, I don”t really know why I’m posting this except to remind some of us who take off to go fly fishing quite a lot that this area ( which many would consider the birthplace of modern flyfishing ) is in a state of need and that we should be thankful for what we have and remember those who don”t have the same luxuries.
