English: Patagonia is the land where dreams come true with its breathtaking mountains, massive sky, and crystal clear waters. One can still feel free from all of the madness in the world and reconnect back to the wonders of nature. All the lakes and rivers one can still drink from as they have not been spoiled by man. With that said, I once again met up with my dear friends Miguel Sanchez and Gustavo Morales to learn more about their waters. This time we met up to explore and fly fish some really untouched lakes in the providence of Chubut (central Patagonia). We had to access the lakes by four wheel drive as the roads are primarily all dirt with difficult crossings, but once arrived at you know that you are in the land of beautiful hungry trout. We prepared to …Espa?ol: dif?ciles.
English: breakdown these lakes tactfully always keeping four things in mind what you are looking for:
1. Streams or small brooks that feed into the lakes.
2. Big boulders or dramatic changes in depth usually shown by the color change.
3. Steep cliffs targeting caves cut out through time.
4. Grass lines on the edges of the lake.
With these things in mind we would use floating lines in the morning generally catching rainbows on larger top water Chernobyl flies near streams, and in the afternoon use massive black and red bunny leech patterns casting towards boulders and water color changes which showed the depth changes. With sinking lines or shooting heads one must always be conscious of maintaining line control as you wait for your line to sink. Underwater currents consistently put a bow in your line which could lead to missing fish if not careful. We would work together each day learning from one another and truly enjoying every moment we got to spend with these beautiful works of nature. We found that bigger profile flies lead to many more attacks and bigger aggressive browns. I try to tie these flies with much longer tails and bigger bodies than normal, although still using single hooks and not tandem which weeds out many smaller fish. I have found that looking at underwater movement is critical when tying these flies as it helps me determine the profile. We had extremely windy weather for the most part which meant we had to fish down more than normal, therefore we would use five and six weight 10.5 rods to chuck these massive flies to the coast, but at sunset we would play a game with a four weight rod were you had three casts and your out if you did not close the deal. We managed to catch some beautiful trout and see a great variety of color differences in each fish. Here in Argentina the food and wine is just as important as the fly fishing so to make sure the fires were well attended we made an asado everyday grilling incredible cuts of Patagonia meat. Once again I thank you dearly from my heart for just incredible experience in your waters and can’t wait till the next adventure.
Alex- Great Stuff I always enjoy watching what you and your boys are up to on the bottom of the world. You and your crew are bless with some unbelievable resources “untouched by time” thank you for sharing.

Alex. Ever since you came to Maine to fish with Greg and me, Greg has been awe struck with some of the fly fishing you do in Argentina. Now, if you remember correctly, we basically left Greg high on the river while me and you treked miles downstream over huge bolders and wading sections of river that most would not feel comfortable wading. So, basically … a day that was supposed to be me and Greg turned into me and you and Greg, and we essentially left Greg all alone upstream to fish by himself. The coolest thing about that, is Greg doesn’t care (to some degree) .. and that’s what makes fishing with Greg fun. He understands that guys like us are younger (and possibly dumber) than him and by no means does he want to “hold us back”. With that said, whether it’s steelheading with me, greg and austin or trout fishing with me, you and greg … it’s almost inevitable that Greg will spend a good part of the day wondering “where the heck did they go?” .. But, when we return … he says with honest enthusiasm, “Did you guys find any good fish?” .. and he wants see the big fish we caught (if any) on our digital cameras and is excited for us! And, when night falls we all go to dinner or what not and laugh and joke and have a blast .. just like we did in Maine when you came to fish with us. So, for all of the ways that Greg has been a great friend to me and a Great fly fishing buddy that I have known for many years …. I would love to have Greg experience Argentina with me someday. You have met and fished with Greg and the reality of the situation is that he is older than us and not interested in the same “hard core” style of fishing that we might be. What might be a good time to come to Argentina with Greg? Is there any options that don’t necessarily include sleeping in the dirt and trekking through miles of barren land? My question is this. I think that Greg would really enjoy the Sea Run Brown Trout fishing. Is there a way we could sea run brown trout fish in the same manner we all fished together in Maine .. so that there is a place that offers options for me and you to explore and at the same time offers some level of comfort for Greg and the ability for him to be “in the game” without having to sleep in the dirt, pop a tent in 40 mph winds, live like animals and go above and beyond what most people would be willing to do? If so, i think it would be so cool to experience Argentina with Greg, especially since Greg was the person helped me to share Maine with you. Let me know. Thanks.
Thanks man the positive feedback really keep us all going.
Alex
Your guy’s stories and pics keep us going!! Keep up the great work and keep the stories coming…I plan on taking a trip out there in about four years (I need to save up because I have 4 kids) and I can’t wait. Thanks again for the great stories!!
Absolutely, there are many incredible options the problem sometimes with sea runs here is that the majority of water is private therefore you have to go to a lodge and there are many however they fill up very fast during the main season, but I would absolutely love Greg to come and join us here I know he would love it. And we could also stay in Cabanas here which are beautiful small rooms that have all of the comforts of home…ie beds, kitchen , etc and fish the water I know unlimited options just get down here.
