I received a call in the morning from Jeremy that the Maine fresh water was fishing well. He said that the Landlocked Salmon and native Maine Brook Trout were on the move from the lakes into the rivers. I am from Argentina and was visiting and staying with family in Connecticut for the month of September. It was an eight hour drive from Connecticut to Maine and I only had one day I could fish but I knew that I just had to get it done. My theory is that when the fishing is on, you have to capitalize on the opportunity. In Argentina it is important to fly fish when the fish are there. Not necessarily on your schedule but the fishes schedule. So, I am accustomed to last minute Trout and Salmon adventures. I had been fly fishing strictly on salt water during my stay in the USA and hadn’t planned on fly fishing for Trout. So I made the switch as best I could. I grabbed my home made five weight, some Argentina Brown Trout fly boxes and headed North in a little beater car to meet Jeremy. I had one day to fish hard and get back that same night. Things started of a little slow until we got to a river that was off the beaten path. We drove for some time on dirt roads and finally arrived at the river. For the first time during the day, I felt at home. Fast ripping water and unlimited structure. This river was a Trout and Salmon paradise. People often say the grass is always greener on the other side. However, Jeremy and were discussing how fly fisherman often take their own home water for granted. Maine has the same vastness as Argentina with thousands of rivers and streams. Maine is equally as beautiful and amazing as is Argentina. The only thing I wish I had was more time. I wish I had four more lives to fish all of Maine’s waters. I showed Jeremy my fly box and mentioned that I would really love to catch a fish on some of the patterns I tie and use in Argentina. Jeremy looked at my box and said, “Oh yah, these will work.” So, Jeremy put us right where the fish were and I put my big Argentinean fly patterns to work. Not just one, but all of my soft hackle Argentinean fly patterns worked. I was the happiest man on earth. Jeremy graciously loaned me his home water and we continued to land many beautiful Landlocked Salmon and magnificent native Maine Brook Trout. It seemed to be one fish after another. From that moment on Maine will forever be in my dreams. Jeremy, when you come to Argentina this year, I will graciously extend the same level of hospitality. Thank you for an amazing fly fishing memory.

great vid and read. One of the things I like is that trout live in bueatiful places. THey require all the fixings when it comes to environs they live in. Wherever they are stocked and take to their surroundings become wild and reproduce, that must be a great place. Argentina, Montana, New Zealand, Maine, wherever they are, it’s beautiful, clean and the trout are eating similar things. Sweet!!!
alex – we had a great month man. albies – on the ri main land, block island, boats, jetties, beaches … then the trip to maine was so memorable for me because it was so last minute and you enjoyed yourself so much … based on spending so much time with you and having so many laughs .. it must be true what you say about the argentinean people and the argentinean way of life … less concerned with the material things and more concerned with quality of life, good music, good friends and quality time spent. i hope you had safe travels back …. i will always have the greatest memories of the fly fishing 2006 season …. to many stories and laughs to even keep track of … see you in patagonia.
It’s nice to see the appreciation that you have of the Maine experience. Argentina is amazing as is are so many places and yet each place offers it’s own treasures. Being able to share our special places with another person who appreciates it, is joy in of itself and that was evident on your face.
When you go south send us some videos from Patagonia so we can see some of that beautiful world.
Nice Brookie! Dying to get into a Maine Brookie. Some day.
Alex,
Good to see you hooking up on Maine waters! We really are spoiled here in Maine with so many great places to fish!
I also wanted to thank you for all the good info you gave me down in Rhode Island this fall about chasing Albies.
Though I didn’t seal the deal on one, I feel better prepared to make it happen next year, thanks to insight from you Jeremy and Greg S!
I’d love to show you some of my home waters here in Maine next year when you get back from Argentina give me a shout. There is always a seat for you in my boat.
We’ll go find you a “channel cat!”
Have an awesome season down south, and stay in touch.
Hey man sorry we didn’t ever get the chance to meet up next time i would love to learn the river with your trainned eyes, and experience…
Our season for trout starts here the 15th of november and I have unlimted connection so keep in touch, Alex
Boz we never got to say goodbye the way i like it because you never say goodbye just see you later on the next river, I had a great time with you and I wished we could have spent more time.. Keep in touch brother and you know you are always welcome here…Alex
Great read Alex. Those are certainly some prime Maine specimens. Sorry the King salmon eluded you…look me up when your back in the states….we will tie you into one of those giants.
Some of those sequences in the video are totally outrageous. That water is sick Jeremy….please put me in those runs next summer.
Hi Alex, thanks for teaching me about the albies. When you hooked the albie that day still goes down as “the coolest thing ever.” Hope to see more of you in the future.
Austin
p.s. thanks for helping me out with, as you and boz put it, the channel cat.
Alex-Glad I got to meet you and glad you had I great time in ME. I haven’t seen the video yet, but I can say that is one of my favorite rivers in the state…. Hopefully I’ll see you next yr. I never did land an albie and went 0-5 so next year it’s on!
Keith

Send some pictures our way…it’s going to be a long winter.

Nice video and text Alex.
Love to fish both places (Maine and Argentina) some day… But for me it’s a little more than a 8 hour drive 😉
